The sergeant major damselfish, scientifically known as Abudefduf saxatilis, is a hardy, wide-ranging marine teleost fish native to the shallow reefs, rocky shores, and piers of the tropical Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico. Reaching an average adult size of 6 to 7 inches (15 to 18 centimeters) in length, it is considerably larger than most other aquarium-kept damselfish. It is easily recognized by its silvery-blue to bright yellow upper body marked with five prominent, dark vertical bars reminiscent of military insignia. In the wild, sergeant majors are highly adaptable opportunistic omnivores that form large feeding aggregations over shallow reef structures. They feed continuously on filamentous algae, zooplankton, small benthic invertebrates, and fish eggs. Males are famously dedicated nest guardians, turning dark blue or slate grey while defending purple egg clutches deposited on flat rock surfaces against any potential egg predators.

In a home aquarium, Abudefduf saxatilis is extremely resilient, reef-safe around corals, and forgiving of water parameter fluctuations. However, its substantial adult size combined with an exceptionally territorial and aggressive temperament makes it challenging for standard community tanks. As it matures, a sergeant major will dominate large areas of the aquarium, driving smaller or peaceful species away from food and shelter; it is best housed in large tanks alongside robust, active, and equally assertive tank mates like tangs, larger wrasses, and triggers.
