Scientific Name: Heteroconger hassi
Spotted Garden Eels are thin, white eels with black spots that live in burrows in the sand. They stick halfway out of the sand and sway in the current to catch food, then disappear when startled.
Why We're Obsessed
A colony of garden eels is one of the coolest things you can do with a sand bed. It looks like a little underwater garden that's alive. Definitely a project fish, but a really unique one.
Care: Peaceful and reef safe. Needs a deep, fine sand bed (6"+) and a sealed lid; they're escape artists. Best in groups with calm tankmates. Feed small foods like mysis, brine, and copepods in the current several times a day. Max size about 14" (very thin). Minimum tank size: 55 gallons.
