Blue Throat Trigger

Scientific Name: Xanthichthys auromarginatus

The Blue Throat Trigger is one of the few truly peaceful triggerfish. Males have a brilliant blue throat patch and yellow-edged fins; females are more subdued with the same fine-scaled pattern.

Why We're Obsessed

Most people hear "trigger" and think tank-wrecker. The Blue Throat breaks every rule: it's a trigger you can actually keep in a reef. Watching a male flash that electric blue throat in open water never gets old for me. It's one of those fish that makes people stop and ask "wait, what IS that?"

Care: Reef safe with caution (may pick at small crustaceans). Peaceful for a trigger. Eats mysis, krill, and pellets. Max size about 9". Minimum tank size: 125 gallons.
