Catalina Goby
Scientific Name: Lythrypnus dalli
Blue-banded goby reach a maximum adult size of around 2.5 inches. They are brightly colored coral-red, with 5-9 blue bands present towards the front of their bodies. They have two dorsal fins, with a tall, spiny fin placed towards the head, and a longer soft-rayed fin extending down the back. They have a wide pelvic fin on either side of their body, which they use as a suction cup to cling to rocks in fast-moving currents.
As a defense mechanism, lythrypnus dalli secrete a mild toxin, making them irritating to eat. Other species of goby mimic their coloration and pattern to utilize this protection.
Care: A 10-gallon tank is sufficient for a single goby, making them ideal for nano aquariums, though larger tanks are recommended for small groups. The aquarium should include plenty of live rock and small caves to mimic their natural crevices. A tight-fitting lid is recommended because these gobies are known to jump. They live 1-2 years. To successfully care for a Catalina Goby, provide a cool, well-structured aquarium with live rock and hiding spots, maintain stable water parameters, feed a varied carnivorous diet, and choose peaceful, compatible tankmates. Proper acclimation and attention to temperature are essential for their health and longevity.
