Trochus Snail

The trochus snail, primarily referring to species like Trochus histrio or Trochus maculatus (commonly known as the banded trochus snail), is a marine gastropod mollusk native to the Indo-Pacific reefs. Reaching an average size of 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 centimeters) in diameter, it features a classic top-shaped conical shell decorated with thick maroon, pink, or reddish-brown stripes over a white or grey base. These snails are widely considered one of the most reliable and efficient members of a saltwater clean-up crew. Equipped with a strong radula, they continuously graze on nuisance film algae, diatoms, hair algae, and cyanobacteria off live rock, powerheads, and glass walls. Unlike Astrea snails, trochus snails possess a flexible foot that allows them to easily flip themselves right-side up if they fall onto their back, making them much less vulnerable to predators.

In a reef aquarium, trochus snails are completely peaceful and safe around corals and other invertebrates. They require stable salinity, calcium, and magnesium levels to support their dense shell growth, alongside sufficient algae growth to keep them well-fed. Additionally, under favorable aquarium conditions, healthy trochus snails frequently spawn in captivity, helping naturally replenish their population over time.
